Knowing the volume of your hot tub is critical for ensuring the correct administration of chemicals and cleaning agents. Keeping the tub clean and free of contaminants results in a more pleasurable tubbing experience and keeps the tub in optimum condition.

  1. Measure the width of your hot tub as the distance from side to side at its widest part. Record this measurement as the width. Record all measurements as inside dimensions. If the tub is round, consider the length as the same measurement as the width. Measure the tub length, for a rectangular tub, and record this measurement as the length. Measure the depth of water in the tub. For the basic calculation of volume, use the depth of the tub at its deepest part. Record all measurements in feet with decimals for fractions; for example, 4 1/2 feet would be recorded as 4.5 feet.

  2. Calculate the average depth of the tub with a graduated bottom depth as the deepest measurement plus the most shallow measurement divided by two. For example, if the tub is 4 feet deep at one end and 2 feet deep at the other, the average depth is 3 feet (4 plus 2 divided by 2). Use this figure as the depth in the volume calculations.

  3. Calculate the volume of a rectangular or square tub as the length multiplied by the width, multiplied by the depth and finally multiplied by 7.5 to equal the volume in gallons. Length times width gives the surface area of the pool in square feet. Multiplying that by the depth gives the volume in cubic feet. There are 7.5 gallons in each cubic foot, so the multiplication of the number of cubic feet of the tub by 7.5 results in the volume of the hot tub in gallons.

  4. Calculate the volume of a round tub by starting with the radius of the tub, which is half the diameter. Multiply this number by itself and multiply the result by 3.14 for the surface square footage. Multiply the result by the depth of the tub and then by 7.5. For example, for a round tub 5 feet wide and an average of 3 feet deep, divide the 5 in half to equal 2.5. Multiply the result (2.5) by itself to equal 6.25. Multiply the 6.25 by 3.14 to equal 19.6. Multiply this figure by the average depth of 3 feet to equal 58.8. Multiply this figure by 7.5 for the result of 441.56 gallons.

  5. Calculate the volume of an irregularly shaped tub, or to remove the volume occupied by benches, by starting with the base volume. Calculate this by using the widest and longest measurements with the tub depth or average tub depth. Calculate the volume of each section you wish to remove from the total calculation. For example: calculate the volume occupied by a bench as the width of the bench multiplied by the length, multiplied by the depth, multiplied by 7.5. Subtract this amount from the base volume.

  6. Tip

The volume of a tub can also be calculated by measuring the flow of water through the hose filling the tub. However, this can be a difficult measurement for a homeowner to successfully monitor without sophisticated equipment.

Spa shells and frames routinely last 30-40 years, but the moving parts behind the access panel door seldom run more than 10 years. Collectively, those moving parts are called a 'spa pack.' Replacement spa packs are what we specialize in. We also carry replacements for major components such as pumps, blowers, heaters, and controllers.

If your spa is broken and your spa pack is over 8 years old, your surest and most economical solution is to replace the entire spa pack rather than to try to fix the one broken component. If your spa pack is less than 8 years old, replacing a major component is usually the best route.
