Bringing this project back from the dead but theres one difference. I have an XBOX now. I'm only going to get it softmodded sometime next month, but its better to get a headstart I guess.
So in particular I want to try and make Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 1 or 2 (Chihiro) working with an XBOX since no one has seemed to test the game, I know it would require more ram but that's also sort of a concern for me in terms of WMMT, I'm sure the games wouldn't eat up much ram since its highly detailed sure, but its also racing on the Wangan, a very closed road, the space for gameplay is pretty small so I think it might have a small chance of working or atleast booting into the test mode
And also, I've looked around but I can't actually find the amount of RAM that WMMT takes on the Chihiro.
I was sent some XBE/Extracted files for the 2 games as well so that makes things a little easier for me
      the games look like this

Had some sound issues with PCSX-Reloaded but I think that was just down to my settings / not using the right sound plugin.
The first disk was the only one that was tested properly as I didn't play enough of the first disk to need the second disk. The second disk dose boot and get to the bit where it asks you to stick the first disk back in though.

Leave it to Microsoft to build big boxed console which is more a less a PC with a standard IDE 3.5 harddrive, Ethernet cable and an easily modifiable operating system. And leave it to Microsoft to quickly replace the original Xbox with something else within a few years with something improved.

These systems quickly became obsolete and surprisingly affordable second hand. You can find these first generation consoles in second hand stores for very little and you can even get them for free if you know someone who is cleaning out their garage. Games are also very affordable. You can find these second hand at a few game swap shops for a little as a dollar a disc and get the third one free when you buy two.

These were also easily modifiable and a great many techies have created all sorts of mods for the original Xbox. This makes the Xbox quite versatile for those looking for an interesting entertainment system.

Games

There are many great games for the Xbox and it is a Great platform for gamers looking for the most bang for the buck. In it's day, the original Xbox had some of the most exciting games of all time and there are certainly still games worth exploring and playing.

Drawbacks of using the original Xbox as a sole gaming system are not notable. Some games are hard to come by since they have been out of print for many years, and compared to many of the newer games on the market today, the original Xbox games can often seem primitive. But if you can get past that, there is a lot of potential for an Xbox gamer.

The Big List

There are just over 1000 published games for the original Xbox, not counting homebrewed games. That compare to 4556 PlayStation2, 676 PlayStation, and 324 Wii listed games on GameSpot.com. That's not too shabby.

The problem is that most of the games for the Xbox seem to be for young adults and older teenagers and not so much for kids. There were also a lot of really poor quality games released for the Xbox. Of these, there are still a few games worth playing by your child.

Modified Xboxes

There was and still is a great deal of interest in modifying these old Xboxes. This allows you to play games regardless of region, including the 284 titles exclusive to North America, 58 exclusive to Europe, and 24 exclusive to Japan. You can also save your games directly on your hard drive, as well as easily run modified and homebrewed games (which are unfortunately mostly reported games from other systems). Many have also used the Xbox as a media center for playing videos and music, back when media options were not as widely available as they are today. As a media center and entertainment system, its great, but is unable to play some of the newer video formats.

The potential legal utility of a modified Xbox are significant. You can take your entire movie, audio and game collection and place it on a single unit. This means you can box up all those CDs and DVD and hide them away, while still allowing for easy access to this media. This means less clutter in your living area and even less wear on your DVD drive and less wear on those shiny DVD and CD discs. You can also access your entire library without having to get up out of your seat.

I'm have no idea if modifying an Xbox is legal, but Microsoft found a way to ban modded Xboxes from Xbox live when they noted a change in your MAC address and Serial Number. This may have been an effort to prevent using cheats online, which would be painful for all the non-cheating users. This caused a huge dump of used Xboxes which could no longer play Halo on Xbox Live. As Xbox Live was discontinued on April 15, 2010, this isn't a problem anymore.

Softmodding

'Softmodding' is incredibly simple and allows you to run various programs such as game emulators and media systems such as the popular XBMC. This allows you to play just about any game from the Atari 2600 to Play Station as well as movie formats of just about any type. You can hook up your Xbox to your home network, which allows you to easily share transfer or play just about anything on your hard drive on your TV screen via your Xbox.

Softmodding

  • Softmod files and the alternative dashboard to be installed on the Xbox. There are several version of this install.
    • SID (Softmod Installer Deluxe) v5.12
    • Xbox Krayzie Ndure (Next Dimension Uber Rmenhal Exploit) SOFTMOD Pack_2
  • Xplorer360: 'injects' files onto your USB drive in FATX format so your Xbox can read them
  • You need one of the few known games which allows you to run and exploit with files disguised as a saved game
    • Splinter Cell - needs to original black label game (not reprint, re-release, Platinum Edition, Classic Collection or copy)
    • Mechassault - alternate software
    • 007: Go to Load Mission - alternate software
  • USB drive - some work, some won't
  • USB to Xbox cable - Easy to make with female USB, a spare Xbox cable and a little splicing - match colored wires and leave the yellow Xbox wire unconnected.

Softmod kit - There are many versions available.

XboxHDM - Xbox Hard Drive Maker, used to setup harddrive for use with Xbox or to softmod a harddrive

TSOP - reflashing the onboard BIOS chip with a hacked BIOS to circumvent the security mechanisms. This allows you to easily upgrade your harddrive later. This can be done on Version 1.0-1.5 Xboxes but not on the 1.6. Verion 1.0 and 1.1 Xboxes have a1mb TSOPs and the 1.2-1.5 have a 256k TSOP. TSOP also allows you to remove the aerogel capacitor (used as a clock) on 1.0-1.5 Xboxes, which tend to leak and damage the Xbox. Note that removing the aerogel capacitor will cause problems with a few games which need a clock to function.

HeXEN (Heimdall's Xbox Engineering disc)

Other software -xbox-scene.com/software-xbox.php

Chipmodding

Chipmodding is when you add a microchip to your motherboard to allow for modified performance of your motherboard. This was really popular with the PlayStation and appears to be popular with the original Xbox. This is very doable with or without soldering.

Uploading Data and Applications

If you have a modded Xbox, you will need a way to upload data to your Xbox. You have many options.

  • DVD2Xbox: app for ripping game discs to the hard drive.

  • Connect your Xbox to shared folder through a network

  • file manager and FTP client - FileZilla or Total Commander

  • Qwix - extract the ISO files for Xbox and converts games into ISO - allows you to move your games onto your hard drive

HD Display

To get the most out of your high definition television, you need the proper software and cables. This allows for much better quality when playing movies through your Xbox and gamers reports better graphics when playing Xbox games.

  • HD cable - ebay 281017419227

  • Enigmah Videomode Switchdisk aka NTSC-PAL - change your PAL device to NTSC which is required for HD

Emulators

Retro Gaming seems to be the rage and is easy to do through your Xbox. You just need the proper emulator and set of ROMs.

  • retrogamescollector.com emulation cheap using original xbox

  • epforums.org 57635 - List of Every Emulator for Original Xbox

  • PcsXbox - PlayStation too!

There are a few MEGA and specialty emulator systems available that seem worth mentioning:

  • DOSBox - this emulator emulates DOS, allowing you to run all types of old DOS programs. There are plenty of old programs including a fair amount of shareware and freeware to explore. Many of the available games are even educational and/or suitable for smaller children.

  • ScummVM - allows you to play point and click PC games such as Monkey Island, Freddi Fish, Putt Putt, etc. You will need a mouse (and a USB adaptor) to operate ScummVM and many of these older programs. There are great options for small kids. see scummvm.org

  • Windows 98 - You can run good old Win 98 on an xbox. This allows you to run old Windows games on your Xbox and be different.

  • CoinOps - an enormous multi-system emulator platform with thousands of games under a single umbrella dashboard.

  • Visionary (aka Vision) - similar to CoinOps but said to be fancier.

XBMC

This allows you to play many types of image, audio and video formats. This is a great system if you want to turn your Xbox into a media center.

XBMC was The System to use in it's day, but the Xbox has trouble reading and playing certain formats. That said, there are work arounds which allow you to play Hi Def BluRay movie through your Xbox. Seexbmc4Xbox.org 355

What you need for XBMC:

  • You need to find a copy of XBMC - it's out there somewhere.

  • XBMC4Xbox xbmc4Xbox.org.uk - these guys picked up support for XBMC for the Xbox after the original developers for XBMC went on to support the XBMC made for all operating systems other than the outdated Xbox

  • theisozone.com xbmc4Xbox-35-new-update-2 replace your XBMC folder with this

Video Files

XBMC was excellent in its day, but the world has moved on and HD media is now very popular and more or less the standard for video quality. The 733 MHz x86 Intel Celeron/Pentium III Custom Hybrid CPU and 64MB of RAM used in older Xboxes combined with a lack of hardware acceleration is unable to handle many of the new encoded formats. Sorry.

XBMC should play 720p videos if encoded with H.263 (MPEG4-ASP / DIVX / XVID) irrespective of container (avi, mkv, mp4, etc).

Encoding with H.264 (MPEG4-AVC, x264) and greater resolution than 480p will be problematic.

You can reencode your videos if you really love our XBMC, or you can use another means of playing videos.

Hardware Upgrades

If you really get into using your Xbox, you may wish to upgrade the hardware to allow for greater capacity and potential.

Hard Drive Upgrade

The Xbox came with either an 8GB (Western Digital) or 10GB (Seagate - formatted to 8GB) drive. The 8GB HDD which came with the Xbox allows you to save a few games or run a few emulations platforms. But if you are trying to store your games library or movie library on your Xbox, you'll need a larger hard drive. There are several ways to set up a new hardrive, but using Chimp may be the easiest route.

If you have a softmodded Xbox, you will need a harddrive which is 'lockable'.

  • standard 3.5” PATA (IDE) hard drive -

    • amazon B0002F8578 250GB

    • amazon B00151U4DG 160GB

    • amazon B005T3GRN2 2TB - will need a SATA adapter (ebay.com 110514753323) and 64K cluster formatting of partitions

    • You can also run a SATA drive, which is easier to find and much more affordable than the now harder to find IDE drives. You will need an IDE to SATA adapter, which looks like a mini motherboard. See xbmc4Xbox.org 5605

  • A molex Y splitter.

  • A torx screwdriver kit with T10, T15 and T20 tips.

  • Chimp: disk cloning utility

Notes on hard drive selection:

  • Don't get 'Green' WD drives

  • Samsung and Seagate harddrives run cool and quiet

  • 5400RPMs works fine and 7800 provide no performance improvement. A 5400 runs cooler and quieter.

  • XBMC only supports F: and G: partitions for harddrives

  • Harddrives larger than 137GB need a LBA48 compatible BIOS. Older BIOS versions will cause problems.

  • 2TB (2048GB) is the maximum size the FAT-X file system can address. The lba48k BIOS used a 32bit sector number throughout the kernel which limits the HDD size to 2TB. These larger hard drives increase load times, which can cause an error.

  • When formatting your partitions, ensure you do so with the proper format cluster. If you use too small of a cluster size, you will end up with corrupt data after a certain point.

    Cluster SizeMax
    Partition Size
    16kb 256GB
    32kb 512GB
    64kb 1024GB
128k 2048GB Not sported by Xbox?
  • If a partition is larger than 256GB, the partition needs to be formatted with 32k clusters. If the partition is greater than 512GB, the partition needs to be formatted with 64k clusters. XBpartitioner is the tool of choice for partition formatting and came in several versions. Earlier versions of XBpartitioner were unable to handle larger harddrives.

  • If you want to run XMugen, you may need an F Partition formatted with 16kb clusters.

  • LBA48 BIOS allows for a max of 512GB per partition at 32k clusters. According to xbmc4xbox.org.uk, 512GB is the max size you can use on partition F and G if you run XBMC. Despite this, you CAN use a 2TB harddrive with XBMC with 1TB F and G drives formatted with 64kb clusters.

  • If using a 2TB HDD, give the F: and G: partitions both 927.78 GB using 64k clusters

theisozone.com external-hdd-mod-tutorial-v01 external harddrive

Allows you to store files outside of your Xbox.

The consensuses that you can not stream games over a network. This may be because you need a program such as XBMC to connect to a network drive and once you launch and executable file, it shuts off XBMC.

You can however stream movies and audio, which can save a lot of storage space on your harddrive and allow other computers on your network to use these same files. Many have in fact turned their Xboxes into a NAS.

USB

USB is 1.1 and is limited to 4GB on XBMC. Not all flash drives work with FATX or with the Xbox. It is easy to make a USB adapter. Simply strip the wires on each cable and match the wire colors. The yellow wire found in the Xbox cable is used for data and should not be attached to the USB cable.

  1. Red = Positive Power (+5V DC)
  2. White = Data -
  3. Green = Data +
  4. Yellow = Unused
  5. Black = Ground (0V DC)

FATX Limitations

The XBOX bios and harddrive uses FATX format which has notable limitations.

  • Files and folder names and use a max of 42 characters
(DVD's do not have the same limits and don't use FatX)

  • Folder file names do not like ',' and the '+' is a big no no for files or folder names - INVALID CHARS: < > = ? : ; ' * + , /

  • 4GB / 4096 Megabyte 4294967296 bytes Max file size

  • A maximum of 240 in total folder depth

  • A maximum of 240 folders and files in each folder

  • A maximum of 4096 files and folders in a single root folder

  • Cluster sizes supported

    SizeBytesSectors per Cluster
    4 KB0x1000 , 0x8
    8 KB0x20000x10
    16 KB0x40000x20
    32 KB0x80000x40
    64 KB0x100000x80

Harddrive Locking

The Xbox BIOS uses a special setup which unlocks the harddrive when it boots up. It uses a ATA security key stored on your harddrive EEPROM (a chip on the board used for storing a security key). If your harddrive security key does not match the one on your Xbox's EEPROM, your harddrive will fail to boot. The harddrive will automatically lock when powered down.

This prevents you from swapping harddrives between Xboxs and adds on another layer of complexity when upgrading a harddrive. There are plenty of programs which will unlock and lock a harddrive. ChipModding or altering the system BIOS will also bypass the password check, allowing you to use an unlocked harddrive.

If you need to access your harddrive with a PC, you can boot your Xbox (this unlocks the harddrive), then hook up an IDE cable to the Xbox harddrive while leaving the harddrive plugged in to it's power source.

Passwords found on Xbox HDD are sometimes “XboxSCENE” or “TEAMASSEMBLY”

If you have a locked harddrive, there are a number of ways to determine the password. You can use programs on your harddrive or a homemade EEPROM reader for your motherboard.

EEPROM Reader

If you have a dead harddrive and want to get your Xbox working again, you'll need to get that Xbox's unique security key off of the EEPROM on the motherboard. This can be done with a homemade EEPROM reader and a bit of fiddling. Once you have the security key off of the so Xbox, you can build a new harddrive and bring a dead Xbox back to life.

BIOS

The BIOS is the firmware installed on the Xbox. In the case of the Xbox, it also has an operating system built in it's BIOS. The BIOS can be altered to allow you to turn your Xbox into server and run Linux or can be altered to allow you to run games for different regions (PAL/NTSC switching).

Other Hacked BIOS have been made, allowing you to run Linux or bypass harddrive locking. Since many of these these use Microsoft code, they are not legal to use.

You can also use a Modchip which allows you to switch between running the BIOS on the chip or the original BIOS on the Xbox.

Replacing the BIOS on your TSOP allows for modding of your firmware with minimal hardmodding and without the need for special chips. This makes for a very low cost clean mod to your Xbox, but care should be taken when messing with your BIOS.

  • Cromwell - free and legal Linux BIOS. This doesn't use any of the Microsoft code, making it fully legal. It will not play XBE (XBox Executable) files which means you can't run Xbox games (DVD or uploaded). This BIOS can be used for locking and unlocking hard disks and video PAL/NTSC switching. Cromwell is a nice clean way to run Linux when using your Xbox and a server.

  • Xromwell - uses the same source code a Cromwell and is set up as a XBE (XBox Executable)

  • Legal BIOS - xbox-scene.com legalbios

Cooling

If you go with a big hard drive and use your Xbox to transfer lots of data, you'll need to upgrade your cooling system.

The simplest way to upgrade your fan is by increasing the voltage to it to 12V. The stock Xbox fan is grounded to a 7V ground which limits the top speed of the fan as well as limits noise. If you ground the black wire to a screw or the metal frame, your fan will speed up significantly.

Opening the vent behind the fan will also increase air flow to some extent and is easy to perform with tin snips.

The next step up is to replace your stock fan with a quiet 80mm fan, cutting away extra plastic around the back of your hard drive holder, and hooking it up to 12V. With a little trimming, a fan will easily fit in the stock location. You can also mount your fan outside of your Xbox, but this takes a bit of trimming to get it to work if you want it to look right..

Additional pusher fans mounted to the side or top of your Xbox have also been done. You can add outside mounted fans just about anywhere in on the case.

80mm Xilence fan - black or red

Vantec Stealth 80mm Case Fan - comes with 3 to 4 pin adapter - can hook up directly to stock mounts, but adapter will allow for full 12V speed.

Thermal GreaseThermal Compound

The thermal compound which comes with the Xbox can fail. It can be easily replaced with new thermal grease or compound. Get some ArcticSilver 5 and ArctiClean and replace the thermal compound between your processor and heat sink. Hint: to get your heat sinks off, allow your Xbox to warm up first. This will make it a lot easier to get the heat sink off.

First generation Xboxs came with a Thomson TGM600 DVD drive. These were very problematic. They will NOT read CD-Rs and has problems reading a lot of CD-RWs

Xbox 1.3 came with a Phillips VAD6011. This was more reliable than the Thompson. Thee cannot read most CD-Rs, but can read most CD-RW.

The Phillips DVD was replaced with two Samsung DVD versions. These are much more reliable and are able to read most media, except for DVD+R and DVD+RW. It can read DVD-R and DVD-RW. These can be replaced with aSamsung 616T IDE DVD Drive, which are now hard to find.

Later model Xboxs (late September 2004 -Xbox v1.6/v1.6b) came with a more reliable Hitachi LG GDR-8050L DVD-ROM. This DVD drive comes with a white connector cable instead of yellow. The tray is similar to the one found of a Thomson drive but has a wider cutout. It can read and play DVD+R and DVD+RW but not CD-Rs.

There are a few ways to make other DVD drives work on an Xbox. See Xbox-scene.com 192
