Byomkesh Gotro had a budget of 32 Crores & it ended up scoring 25 Crores at the box office. So it’s definitely not a hit movie if we judge by the numbers. However, the story is an iconic Byomkesh Bakshi one & cast like Abir Chatterjee, Sohini Sarkar & Anjan Dutta did make a pretty compelling movie. Satyakam Meets Byomkesh

This movie is set up in post-independent Calcutta, but the movie was shot in Mussoorie but still manages the flavor of the colonial era. The main Character of the movie Satyakam( Arjun Chakraborty) is a glamours personality and has a lavish lifestyle. His character is shown full of sarcasm and distrustful. Another shade of his personality is he is romantic, gallant and basically a Casanova. The movie begins in Mussoorie when Satyakam visits Byomkesh Bakshi ( Abeer Chatterjee) who is a detective in Calcutta. Satyakam is very worried and the reason for his worry is very different. That is he wants Byomkesh to investigate his own murder. Satyakam firmly believes that he is going to be murdered and it is inevitable. At first, Byomkesh felt very strange to hear that but he started conversing to Satyakam.

Satyakam Shares His Life

During the conversation between Byomkesh and Satyakam who wants to investigate his murder but persistently refusing to tell names on whom he suspects to Byomkesh. He further tells Byomkesh that he is addicted to alcohol and can’t survive without it. Later on, He shares many details to him in order to help him to investigate the case properly. He more added and tell Byomkesh about his inclination towards women, and his lavish and glamorous larger than life, lifestyle. Here Byomkesh is getting irritated and upset by Satyakam’s impudent and bold nature and character. He also shares the name of his confidants and best buddies Ajit(Rahul Banerjee) and Satyabati(Sohini Sarkar) hence he almost shares every detail of his with him. Moreover to Byomeksh’s shock, Satyakam paid his fee in advance as he fears of his murder.

Byomkesh Starts With Investigations

After gathering all Satyakam’s details Byomkesh leaves for Mussoorie. And after reaching there he started an investigation without wasting a single minute. He starts with the local police inspector and his name is Pandey Ji ( Harsh Chayya). During his investigations, he comes to know that Satykam’s father’s Ushapati Das ( Anjan Dutta) shelter one of his relative Sitangushu to whom Satykam’s father has given shelter to live and he is extremely angry and shows vehemently violent behavior towards Satyakam. But on the other hand, Sitanushu’s younger sister named Chumki played by Sauraseni Mitra is madly in love with Satyakam. Moreover, he comes to know that not only Chumki but Pandey Ji’s daughter played by Bibriti Chatterjee who is cabaret dancer by profession is also in deep love with Satyakam. And both the ladies are well aware of Satyakam’s frivolous nature still they are in madly love with him.

Eventually, Satyakam Got Murdered

Here since Byomkesh reached Mussoorie, he feels that Satyakam’s life is really in danger as he sense that many people are behind Satyakam’s life hence he feels that the case is becoming difficult but he doesn’t show his bothering about the case and behave very normally with everyone and pretends that he will soon catch the culprit. But unfortunately and very sad that Satyakam got murdered one day. During the investigation, Byomkesh is getting several warning and threats from many people to stop the investigation there only and go back from Mussoorie. And he finds that everyone is trying to protect the murderer and the culprit of Sartakam’s murder. But Byomkesh does not care about this and continues his investigation. Will Byomkesh reach to the murderer and solve the case? now the story revolves around this.

Review of Byomkesh Gotro

The film, in my opinion, is a fantastic example of how an interesting detective story can be converted into a lumbering tale of tremendous ennui. Visuals in some places are quite good. Rahul in the role of Ajit is a complete misfit. The character of Satyakaam has been overdone. The entire methodology of Byomkesh seemed a speculative exercise. Though Abir and Anjan Dutta tried their best, the acting in the role of other characters was below-average. It seemed to be a waste of time and money to me.

However, the vintage cars and beautiful scenery of Missouri are the only good things about this movie. I found the casting to be incredible. Such a well-paced storyline keeping the suspense alive and us sitting at the edge of our seats. It is a film worth every penny. Adding equally to its glory is the brilliant music direction by the genius that is Mr. Bickram Ghosh. The background music reflects the knowledge base of a supreme classical musician. The songs are an auditory treat with super sound production by Shamik Guha Roy. Loved it and kudos to the team. Well done.
